Wastewater Process Selector

A high-level process train from industry and wastewater character (screening → equalization → …). Equipment is not selected without flow and a discharge standard.

Calculator

The report is an ordered train, why each stage appeared, Envora service links, alternatives and risks. Equipment is not selected without flow, jar tests and a discharge standard.

Industry and intent

If blank, the screen assumes discharge; RO opens only with salinity or the reuse box.

Scale and load (optional)

Qualitative small / medium / large only. No equipment, HRT or membrane area.

Optional. With BOD, used only for the COD/BOD biodegradability hint.

Optional. Ratio > 3.5 hints at low biodegradability; not a design value.

Wastewater characteristics

Multiple boxes allowed. Combined with industry defaults.

Disclaimer: Calculations use general engineering relations and are for preliminary assessment only. They are not sufficient for design, quotation, equipment selection or investment decisions. Contact Envora Global for detailed hydraulic, chemical and process design.

The selector builds a stage order in Envora’s industrial WWTP language: screening and grit, equalization, API/CPI or DAF, physicochemical precipitation, biology (activated sludge, SBR, MBBR or MBR), nutrients, filtration, UF/RO reuse if needed, disinfection and sludge dewatering.

Food and dairy highlight oil plus COD; refineries need API/CPI then DAF; mining and metal finishing need metal precipitation; municipal and OIZ plants highlight nutrients; textile colour and salt; pharma toxicity and MBR. Maritime oily water / bilge is a dedicated oil-separation train. Salinity or reuse puts UF/RO on the feasibility list; ZLD only when discharge cost or zero-liquid rules justify it.

The output is not a tender specification or an equipment order. Flow is only a small/medium/large note. COD/BOD is only a biodegradability hint. Design requires jar tests, a discharge standard and a lab package.

Who is it for?

Environmental and process engineers, OIZ and municipal teams, refinery / food / mining advisors, and plant staff asking which Envora stages are discussed for this character.

How it works

Industry is required. Tick character boxes. Optional: discharge / reuse / ZLD intent, order-of-magnitude Q (m³/d) and COD–BOD. Stages are merged; the report states why each stage appeared and links the Envora service.

Assumptions and limits

Common Envora industrial practice. No HRT, sludge age, membrane flux or chemical kg. Q is scale only; COD/BOD is a ratio only. Toxicity and salinity may push biology toward MBR/RO.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a bid or a tender specification?

No. The selector yields technology classes and a stage order. Brand, capacity, P&ID and warranty are not given without flow, jar tests, a discharge standard and a lab package. Envora’s engineering team confirms the design.

When are SBR, MBBR and MBR discussed?

SBR is common on small, shift-based food or municipal trains. Medium industrial COD often uses MBBR or continuous activated sludge. Space limits, reuse, toxicity or pharma wastewater favour MBR (then RO if needed). Final choice depends on jar tests and the effluent target.

Must I enter COD and BOD?

No. If both are filled, the COD/BOD ratio is a biodegradability hint: below ~2.5 readily biodegradable, above 3.5 poorly biodegradable (AOP/carbon or MBR). The numbers do not size equipment.

What is the difference between API/CPI and DAF?

On free oil (refinery, bilge) Envora starts with API or CPI. Emulsified oil, food/dairy and high TSS use DAF as a complement or replacement. They are not the same stage.

What changes if I choose reuse or ZLD?

UF and RO stages are added. ZLD also puts evaporation on the feasibility list. Use the recovery tool for annual m³ and tariffs, and the RO calculator for permeate/concentrate. Concentrate handling is a separate study.

Which Envora service page should I open?

Industrial and OIZ trains map to wastewater-plant installation; refinery API/DAF to the oil-refinery wastewater page; metals/mining to heavy-metal removal; municipal sewage to municipal WWTP pages. The report places the matching internal link next to each stage.
